Paul says in his letter to the Galatians, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Gal. 5:25) That seems like a rather logical conclusion, but when the idea is put to the test of real life it proves to be challenging! I finished my message on the topic Sunday morning and by Monday night I’d already found myself challenged to apply what I’d preached, and I failed! Self control, when directed by the Spirit, is a joy to experience. But when we lose it, the impact can be significant. Thank the Lord for forgiveness and grace which allows us to begin again. So, I’m still on course, seeking to keep in step with the Spirit, reminded at the same time I’ve not arrived at perfection, not yet anyway!
In our Hebrews study on Tuesday night we discussed what it means to have God’s law written on our hearts. Kevin, our study leader’s response was, “the difference is between obligation and desire. When God’s law is written on my heart, I WANT to do His bidding.” Mathew Henry notes in his commentary this “keeping in step with the Spirit” means we are free from the CONDEMNATION of the law although the law’s COMMANDS still apply. As we keep in step with the Spirit, that obedience and the fruits of that life become part of what we do to glorify our Father.
This week we’re taking a look at our vision. We have a Ministry Team retreat planned for Saturday with a focus on seeking His direction for our church. The message Sunday morning will focus on the basics of our vision. We’re trying to answer the question, What’s my vision if I’m in step with the Spirit? What does the Word teach us about a life that’s in step with the Spirit? In contrast, I’m reminded of the story of a little boy who had been disobedient. His punishment was to sit in his chair until his mom told him he was free to go. His response was, “OK, but while I’m sitting down on the outside I’m still standing up on the inside.” When we get in step with the Spirit It’s our desire to serve the Lord from the heart. Pastor Marv
